Mama Lucy Hospital Board member Gaucho Calvince Okoth has openly shared details about his new government appointment, revealing that the position does not come with a fixed salary but instead operates on a sitting allowance basis.
Speaking candidly, Gaucho said that many people assume appointed board members receive hefty monthly pay, but his experience has been different.
“Watu wa Kizungu wengi walitusi mimi bure,” he said, adding that there has been a lot of misunderstanding and criticism about his role and earnings.
He clarified that there is no salary attached to the job. “Hakuna salary. Ninapewa allowance per sitting. Sitting allowance ya kwanza tulipewa KSh 8,000,” he explained, noting that payments are made only when board meetings are held.
Gaucho further revealed that when he joined the board, he was informed that the role would primarily be allowance-based, with potential for growth and future opportunities.
“Nilikuja nikaambiwa kuwa hiyo kazi itakuwa na allowance lakini ni step, inaweza kukupeleka mahali fulani,” he said, suggesting that the position could open doors to other opportunities in public service or leadership.
Beyond the board meetings, Gaucho emphasized that he engages in additional responsibilities not visible to the public.
He also addressed his personal financial commitments, stating that he pays KSh 70,000 for rent and manages his own living expenses.
“Iko vitu zingine nafanya beyond ile kitu watu wanaona. Nilisema nalipa nyumba KSh 70k. Hakuna politician anaweza kukupea pesa kama hiyo na akufanyie shopping, ulipe wi-fi. Lazima utumie akili,” he stated.
His remarks have sparked mixed reactions online, with some Kenyans praising his honesty while others continue to debate the transparency and structure of public board allowances.
