Rigathi Gachagua Sets Conditions for Reconciliation With Ruto After Meeting Kalenjin Elders

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed details of a private meeting with a group of Kalenjin elders who reportedly urged him to reconcile with President William Ruto following their dramatic political fallout.

Speaking during a public gathering in Kajiado County, Gachagua said the elders appealed to him to consider forgiveness and national unity despite the tensions that have continued to define his relationship with the president.

According to the former deputy president, the elders acknowledged the political humiliation and betrayal he believes he suffered after falling out with Ruto and sections of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

He claimed the delegation pleaded with him to rise above the conflict for the sake of peace and stability in the country.

Gachagua disclosed that the elders made emotional appeals during the discussions, insisting that both he and his supporters had endured pain because of recent political developments.

They reportedly urged him to embrace reconciliation in order to ease growing tensions that continue to influence the national political conversation.

However, the former deputy president maintained that any possible reconciliation would only happen under strict conditions.

Gachagua insisted that accountability must first be addressed regarding young Kenyans who lost their lives during the Gen Z protests witnessed in recent months.

He argued that forgiveness cannot be discussed before justice is served, saying those responsible for the deaths of young protesters must first be held accountable.

His remarks appeared to directly challenge the government’s handling of demonstrations and the broader national response to youth-led protests.

The comments highlight the deepening political rift between Gachagua and Ruto, a fallout that has significantly reshaped political alignments within the Mt Kenya region and the ruling coalition.

Political analysts believe Gachagua’s strong stance could further polarize supporters aligned to either side, especially as early campaigns and succession politics ahead of the 2027 General Election continue gaining momentum.

Some leaders have interpreted his remarks as a demand for accountability and justice, while critics argue that the former deputy president is using the issue to sustain political pressure against the current administration.

The ongoing tensions between the two leaders have fueled speculation about possible new alliances within the opposition and among dissatisfied figures within Kenya Kwanza.
