Politics took center stage in Mombasa as the Linda Mwananchi movement held a heated rally at Tononoka Grounds.
The meeting, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, turned into a strong criticism of both the government and the leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Sifuna surprised many when he openly expressed frustration with his own party.
He suggested that ODM is no longer operating as it should and hinted that he may step aside from his role as Secretary-General.
“I could no longer serve as secretary-general in a culture of mediocrity,” Sifuna said.
He added that without the active guidance of Raila Odinga, the party has lost direction.
Siaya Governor James Orengo also spoke strongly against the government.
He accused President William Ruto of failing to honour agreements made with the opposition.
“Ruto cannot be trusted as a friend, especially after stealing Raila’s vote in 2022,” Orengo said. “What they promised Kenyans is an invalid cheque.”
The leaders focused on the rising cost of living and lack of jobs, especially for young people. Many said families are struggling to survive.
Sifuna made a bold claim about the situation facing the youth:
“The only jobs young people are getting is being sent to fight in Russia and dying there because he has failed.”
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino said the economy is tough and many households are under pressure.
Leaders also noted that despite Mombasa being a key port city, local residents are not benefiting enough from economic activities.
As the 2027 elections approach, Orengo urged young people to register as voters.
“This time, there will be no chance to steal the votes. It will be a landslide,” he said.
Other leaders, including Patrick Makau and Caroli Omondi, raised concerns about land issues and the use of coastal resources.
They said the country needs new leadership to restore confidence.
