Kalonzo Musyoka has warned that William Ruto could face renewed international legal pressure if alleged cases of police brutality against young protesters continue, signaling a sharp escalation in political rhetoric from the opposition.
Speaking while addressing supporters in Kitui County, the Wiper Democratic Movement party leader said he previously played a role in supporting Ruto during his legal challenges at the International Criminal Court but would not hesitate to push for renewed action if the government fails to respect the rule of law.
Kalonzo accused the government of adopting a dangerous approach toward young demonstrators, particularly over alleged remarks encouraging the use of force against protesting youth.
He warned that such statements, if matched by action on the ground, could attract international scrutiny and reopen debate about Kenya’s compliance with human rights obligations.
He emphasized that Kenya is a democratic nation guided by constitutional principles and the rule of law, adding that leaders must exercise restraint and protect citizens’ rights regardless of political differences.
According to Kalonzo, any attempt to silence dissent through violence would undermine the country’s democratic gains and damage its global reputation.
The opposition leader made the remarks during a two-day political tour of Kitui County alongside other opposition figures.
The leaders have been holding meetings across the region aimed at consolidating grassroots support and strengthening their political networks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During the engagements, opposition leaders also criticized what they described as shrinking civic space and increasing pressure on young activists.
They called on security agencies to act professionally and avoid confrontations that could escalate tensions across the country.
Kalonzo’s statement is expected to intensify the already heated political debate between the government and opposition, particularly on issues of governance, civil liberties.
