There was drama in Parliament on Tuesday after ODM MP Caroli Omondi clashed with Speaker Moses Wetang'ula and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah over his membership in the Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC).
The two leaders said Omondi should not be a member of CIOC because he belongs to the Sports Committee.
They told the House that records show he is still listed under the Sports Committee and therefore cannot serve in another committee at the same time.
But Omondi strongly disagreed. He said he resigned from the Sports Committee a long time ago.
He accused the leadership of trying to block him from joining CIOC for political reasons. According to him, some leaders do not want him in the committee because of his stand on national issues.
Omondi further claimed that President William Ruto’s government is trying to prepare to rig the 2027 General Election.
He said stopping him from sitting in CIOC is part of a wider plan to control key constitutional processes before the next election.
The MP has been among ODM members who are against the party’s decision to work with President Ruto.
His position has made him differ with some leaders both inside and outside his party.
The argument caused tension in the House, with members watching closely as the leaders exchanged words.
The incident shows growing political divisions in Parliament as the country slowly starts focusing on the 2027 elections.
