Setback to Gov't as IMF Demands Ruto's Corruption Audit Before Provision of Fresh Financial Help

The ruling Kenya Kwanza administration under the leadership of His Excellency President William Ruto has received a major setback in its quest for a fresh financial bailout, after the International Monetary Fund (IMF), blocked negotiations with the Kenyan government, citing unending corruption that has spiralled out of control leading to unlawful embezzlement of public resources.

According to IMF, for a fresh financial aid to be agreed with the Kenyan government and for the negotiations about new terms to proceed in the required cooperation, President William Ruto's administration must first respond to a long delayed corruption audit, which has painted a bad picture about the nation, and plagued the public sector into unending scandals.

Prior to the bold request by the IMF, the government of Kenya through Prime Cabinet Secretary (CS) Musalia Mudavadi had signed off an agreement deal with the IMF in 2024, that all ministries, institutions, departments and government parastatals were to undergo a mandatory governance and corruption audit, in bid to tame the vice and significantly reduce endemic corruption.

However, since the agreement was signed back in 2024, the government of Kenya has allegedly been reluctant to comply with the IMF demands, thus placing Kenya's quest for billions in crucial financing from the IMF hinging or rather hanging on by a thin thread.

According to IMF, the main aim of requesting for detailed corruption diagnostic report is to ensure that public funds are no longer mismanaged, and to strengthen financial accountability as well as tackling revenue loss.

Additionally, IMF wants to further confirm and establish that Kenya's economic reforms on combating corruption are effective before releasing further funds.
