The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has confirmed that its Managing Director Captain William K. Ruto was hospitalised after being involved in a tragic road accident that claimed the life of his daughter in Taita Taveta County.
In a statement released on Saturday, April 4, the authority said the accident occurred on the evening of Friday, April 3, when the KPA boss was travelling with members of his family along a key transport route linking the coastal region to the interior of the country.
According to the authority, the accident left the KPA chief and several family members injured, while his daughter unfortunately died at the scene.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while travelling with his family,” the authority said in a statement.
“Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident. We extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to Capt. Ruto and his family during this time of immense grief,” the statement added.
KPA confirmed that the managing director is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility and remains under close medical supervision. The authority noted that although he sustained injuries in the crash, his condition is stable.
“We remain hopeful for their full and swift recovery,” the authority said while referring to the injured family members.
The maritime agency further indicated that it is cooperating with authorities investigating the incident in order to establish the exact circumstances that led to the accident.
The accident occurred at a time when several road crashes have been reported across the country as travellers head upcountry ahead of the Easter holiday and the closure of schools for the first term.
In a separate incident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near the Kariandusi area in Gilgil, at least eleven people died after a 14-seater matatu rammed into a stalled trailer during the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to local police, the trailer had developed mechanical problems and stalled along the busy highway before the speeding matatu crashed into it.
Elsewhere in Kericho County, another accident occurred at the Tunnel area in Fort Tenan involving two buses and two lorries carrying a total of 66 passengers.
Emergency responders reported that 20 people were injured in the crash, though no fatalities were recorded. Several victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, especially during the busy holiday travel period, as investigations into the accidents continue.
