The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is mourning alongside its Managing Director Captain William K. Ruto after a tragic road accident that claimed the life of his daughter.
In a statement issued on Saturday, April 4, the authority confirmed that the accident occurred on the evening of April 3, 2026, while the KPA chief executive was travelling with members of his family.
The authority described the incident as a devastating loss and extended condolences to the bereaved family during what it termed a difficult and painful moment.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while traveling with his family. Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident,” the authority said in a staff notice.
According to the statement, the accident occurred in the Taita Taveta County area along the key transport corridor linking the coastal city of Mombasa to the interior of the country.
KPA said that although the accident resulted in the loss of the young family member, the managing director and other relatives who were travelling in the same vehicle survived the crash.

They are currently receiving medical attention as they recover from injuries sustained during the incident.
The authority noted that the survivors are in stable condition and are under close medical supervision as health professionals monitor their recovery.
While the notice did not provide detailed information regarding the extent of injuries suffered by the family members, it emphasized that medical teams were closely following their progress.
Authorities have since launched investigations to determine the circumstances that led to the accident.
KPA said it is cooperating fully with relevant agencies to help establish what caused the crash.
“We are cooperating with the relevant authorities as they establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. We will continue to provide updates as appropriate and as more information becomes available,” the authority stated.
The maritime agency also appealed to members of the public and the media to respect the privacy of the grieving family as they come to terms with the loss.
Following news of the tragedy, leaders from the coastal region extended support to the KPA chief and his family.
KPA acknowledged assistance from Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir, the Governor of Mombasa County, and Andrew Mwadime, the Governor of Taita Taveta County, who were among the first leaders to respond and offer help following the accident.
The authority also expressed gratitude to its staff, partners, stakeholders, and members of the public for their messages of sympathy and support during the difficult moment.
Captain Ruto has served as the Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority since 2023, overseeing operations at one of the country’s most critical state corporations responsible for managing port services and maritime logistics.
KPA said it will continue to provide updates should more details about the incident emerge as investigations progress.
