ODM diehard supporter Calvince Okoth popularly known as Gaucho has broken his silence on the storm surrounding his appointment to the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital board, and he has a theory about why so many Kenyans are opposed to it.
Speaking out for the first time since the controversy erupted, Gaucho alleged that the backlash is not really about his qualifications or lack thereof.
He believes the opposition is rooted in the fact that he did not participate in the Gen Z protests.
"Baadhi ya Wakenya wanapinga uteuzi wangu katika board ya Hospitali Mama Lucy Kibaki kwa sababu sikushiriki maandamano ya Gen-Z," he stated, framing the criticism as politically motivated rather than merit based.
He then reminded his critics that the Gen Z generation is not the first to take to the streets in Kenya.
Gaucho pointed out that his own generation also marched, carrying sufurias and mwikos during the high cost of living demonstrations, and that at the time they too were dismissed and told they were being foolish.
He was essentially telling his critics that protest loyalty should not be the measure of a person's worth or their fitness to serve in a public role.
His remarks have divided opinion further online, with some Kenyans agreeing that the backlash carries a political undertone, while others maintain that the core concern was always about competence and not protest participation.
Gaucho clearly has no intention of quietly absorbing the criticism. He is fighting back, and doing so on his own terms.
