Speaking during a political rally held at Tononoka Grounds in Mombasa on Sunday, March 29, Osotsi told supporters that he does not recognize the decision by the party’s Special Delegates Convention (SDC) that removed him from the powerful position.
The senator insisted that the move was politically motivated and lacked legitimacy, accusing some leaders within ODM of attempting to silence dissenting voices within the party.
“I have been told that a group calling itself ‘Linda Ruto’ has removed me as ODM Deputy Party Leader,” Osotsi told the crowd.
“From today, I will serve as the Deputy Party Leader of Linda Mwananchi — the movement of the people.”
His remarks come just days after the ODM Special Delegates Convention held at Jamhuri Grounds in Nairobi announced major changes within the party leadership structure.
During the convention, National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed confirmed that Osotsi had been removed from the position of deputy party leader.
In the new leadership arrangement, Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Nassir were named as the party’s new deputy party leaders.
The reshuffle was widely interpreted as a move by ODM’s top leadership to discipline members accused of opposing the party’s new direction following leadership changes after the death of longtime opposition leader Raila Odinga in October 2025.
However, Osotsi has dismissed the move, saying he is no longer interested in holding the position within the current ODM structure.
Instead, he said he will continue mobilizing support for the Linda Mwananchi movement, which he described as a platform dedicated to defending the interests of ordinary citizens.
“We will continue speaking for the people of Kenya,” Osotsi said. “Leadership is not about titles but about standing with wananchi.”
The Linda Mwananchi faction has recently intensified its political activities across the country, organizing rallies aimed at challenging both the current government and what its members describe as the weakening of democratic ideals within ODM.
The rally in Mombasa attracted several opposition figures aligned with the faction, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who have been openly critical of the party’s current leadership.
Meanwhile, ODM leader Oburu Odinga has defended the party’s recent leadership changes and warned members against acts of indiscipline that could destabilize the organization.
Speaking during the Special Delegates Convention earlier this week, Oburu maintained that the party would not tolerate actions that undermine its democratic structures.
“Democracy does not mean chaos,” he said. “ODM must remain a disciplined and united party.”
Political observers say the open disagreements between the party leadership and the Linda Mwananchi faction signal growing divisions within ODM, raising questions about the party’s unity ahead of the 2027 general election.
For now, the internal contest for influence within the party appears far from over as rival factions continue to mobilize supporters across the country.
