“Akwende na Huko”: Rigathi Gachagua Dismisses Claims of Martha Karua Exit from United Opposition

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence over reports that Martha Karua, leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), has parted ways with the United Opposition.

In a firm and unapologetic response, Gachagua suggested that any leader uncomfortable within the coalition is free to leave and pursue their own political path ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a public baraza at Elangata Enkima in Kajiado South Constituency, Gachagua dismissed the claims with a blunt message, saying those alleging exclusion should simply move on.

“Nasikia kuna wengine tulikuwa nao wakatoka eti tumekataa kuwapatia nafasi. Wakwende kabisa… sisi hatubembelezi mtu,” he stated, signaling a hardline stance within the opposition ranks.

The remarks come amid growing speculation that Karua could be charting an independent political course, possibly with ambitions for the presidency.

While she has not formally confirmed an exit from the coalition, the claims have stirred debate about unity within the opposition as political alignments begin to take shape.

Gachagua emphasized that the United Opposition remains focused on strategy rather than personalities, insisting that its presidential flagbearer will be chosen based on strength and electability.

“Tutakaa chini ili tuelewane ni nani atamenyana na Ruto… hatutachagua mtu kwa sababu alikuwa kwa siasa. Tunataka mtu anaweza kushinda Ruto,” he added.

His comments underscore the coalition’s intention to front a formidable candidate capable of unseating President William Ruto in what is expected to be a highly competitive race.

Analysts say such remarks could both solidify internal resolve and deepen divisions, depending on how coalition partners interpret the tone.

The unfolding developments highlight early jostling within Kenya’s opposition politics, where unity is often tested by individual ambition and strategic disagreements.
