Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has told President William Ruto that Kenyans have made “Wantam” their top agenda, stressing that the country is at a turning point where leadership must rise above individual ambitions.
“At this critical moment, Kenyans deserve leadership and direction. This is bigger than individuals, it’s about safeguarding the future of our Republic and upholding the promise of the 2010 Constitution,” Kalonzo said during a political forum.
His remarks come as opposition leaders rally under a single banner known as the United Opposition, with the declared goal of making the current government a one-term administration.
The group, made up of top politicians from different parties, has vowed to put aside personal ambitions at the right time and front a joint candidate against Ruto in 2027.
Party of National Unity leader Martha Karua, a key member of the alliance, has echoed the sentiment.
She stated that while she is prepared to support a single candidate, she will not accept to be a running mate, emphasizing that her commitment is to principles rather than positions.
Kalonzo’s statement also touched on the growing scandal at the Social Health Authority (SHA).
He accused the government of allowing corruption in the new health scheme, saying Kenyans are losing billions to fraud while hospitals remain underfunded.
The scandal involves medical insurance payments allegedly made to ghost facilities and clinics inflating patient bills.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has admitted that fraudulent claims have cost the government billions, revealing that out of Ksh.82.7 billion submitted in claims, Ksh.10.6 billion was rejected and Ksh.2.1 billion is still under investigation.
Duale has promised a nationwide crackdown, warning that hospitals, doctors, and even patients involved in fraud will face legal consequences.
SHA Chief Executive Officer Mercy Mwangangi has already suspended 85 health facilities, with payments withheld pending investigations.
For Kalonzo and other opposition leaders, the SHA scandal reflects the wider problem of corruption under the Ruto administration.
They argue that public money meant to ease the burden of healthcare is being looted, leaving citizens betrayed.
“The time has come for Kenyans to demand accountability. This struggle is not for us as individuals, it is for the survival of our nation,” Kalonzo said.
