RIP: Photos Emerge Of Those Who Died On The Spot In Nyeri Matatu-Lorry Collision

A tragic road accident near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri on Sunday evening has claimed the lives of 16 people, leaving four others critically injured in one of the region’s deadliest recent crashes.

The collision involved a matatu and a lorry that crashed head-on, resulting in devastating loss. Among those who died were Wambui and her young daughter, whose deaths have deeply moved many and underscored the human toll of the tragedy.

According to Central Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Elizabeth Vivi, the matatu was carrying 14 passengers along with two children, while the lorry had a driver and two loaders onboard.

Preliminary reports indicate that a motorcycle abruptly appeared on the road, forcing the lorry driver to swerve in an محاولة to avoid it, leading to the fatal collision.

Officer Vivi clarified that when accounting for all individuals involved—including drivers and minors—a total of 20 people were caught up in the accident.

The crash scene was chaotic and heartbreaking. Several passengers were trapped beneath the lorry, prompting a desperate rescue effort by first responders and local boda boda riders. They worked tirelessly to remove logs and debris in a bid to reach survivors.

Four victims—three adults and one child—were rushed to hospital in critical condition, where they continue to fight for their lives.

Authorities have so far identified 10 of the deceased, while six bodies remain unnamed. Families with missing relatives have been urged to come forward to assist in the identification process.

At the Nyeri County Hospital mortuary, grief and anguish filled the air as families gathered to identify their loved ones. Officials from the Kenya Red Cross Society were present, offering emotional support to those affected.

Among the grieving families was Ruth Kisinga from Machakos County, who had traveled overnight from Nairobi after receiving news of her brother’s death. Her brother, Sebastian Ndolo, aged 35, was among those who lost their lives in the crash.

Eyewitnesses described the accident as horrific, noting the severity of the impact and the difficulty rescuers faced in accessing victims trapped in the wreckage.

This tragic incident once again highlights the dangers on Kenyan roads and the urgent need for increased vigilance and safety measures to prevent further loss of life.
