Kalonzo vows to make Ruto one term president if he flies United Opposition flag

Kalonzo Musyoka has intensified early political campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election, declaring that he is ready to challenge President William Ruto and promising to make him a one-term leader if he becomes the opposition’s presidential candidate.

The Wiper Party leader said he had already received a mandate from his supporters to contest the presidency and is preparing psychologically and politically for the race to State House.

Speaking about his ambitions, Kalonzo expressed confidence that a united opposition coalition could defeat Ruto in the next election.

“I am running for president. I was given the mandate last year to seek the top office, and after prayerful consideration we have accepted and are ready,” he said.
Push for a united opposition

Kalonzo emphasised that unity among opposition leaders will be critical if they are to defeat the incumbent administration.

According to him, discussions are ongoing among several opposition figures to form a broad coalition capable of presenting a single presidential candidate.

He framed his political mission as part of a wider “liberation” agenda aimed at transforming the country’s leadership.

“I hear the word ukombozi everywhere. It is time to liberate this country, and I believe I can lead that effort if my colleagues give me the opportunity,” he stated.

Confidence in defeating Ruto

The veteran politician insisted that Kenyans are eager for change and suggested that the current political climate favours the opposition.

He added that if opposition leaders rally behind him as the coalition’s flagbearer, President Ruto’s chances of securing a second term would be slim.

“If my colleagues give me that respect and support, William Ruto will be a one-term president — and he knows it,” Kalonzo declared.

Race for the opposition ticket

Kalonzo is expected to seek support from several key political figures who are also influential within opposition circles.

Among those seen as potential partners in a united front are former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua and former Attorney General Justin Muturi.

However, with several leaders eyeing the presidency, analysts say negotiations to settle on a single opposition candidate could prove challenging.
