Witnesses say Owino was pulled out of Nyangande Sub-County Hospital by members of the public before being beaten.
Locals accused him of being part of a group that attacked mourners in Kapiyo Sub-location the previous night. The accusations fueled anger and led to the assault.
Police later found Owino unconscious with a deep cut on his left hand and multiple injuries on his head and legs.
He was rushed to Ahero Sub-County Hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
His body was moved to the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Investigations show Owino was already known to police.
He had a pending robbery with violence case at the Nyando Law Courts, which may have influenced public perception and the mob’s actions.
Authorities have since processed the crime scene and opened inquiries into the attack.
