Alai Warns ODM Infighting Could Jeopardise Ruto’s 2027 Re-Election Bid

Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai has sharply criticised the leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), warning that the party’s growing internal disputes could eventually undermine President William Ruto’s chances of securing re-election in the 2027 General Election.

In a statement shared on his social media accounts on Sunday, March 29, Alai argued that the party’s inability to address internal divisions decisively is weakening ODM from within.

According to the outspoken MCA, the leadership struggles currently playing out in the party risk destabilising not only ODM but also the broader political alliances shaping Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.

“The leadership of ODM will destroy President Ruto’s campaign,” Alai wrote, suggesting that unresolved tensions could have wider political consequences.

Calls for Sifuna’s Removal

In his remarks, Alai singled out Edwin Sifuna, insisting that the party’s recent Special National Delegates Conference should have prioritised his removal as ODM Secretary General.

The MCA accused Sifuna of openly defying party leadership while continuing to use official party resources.

He claimed that despite publicly criticising senior ODM figures, the Nairobi senator still operates with privileges attached to the secretary general’s office.

Alai alleged that Sifuna has continued to use an official party vehicle while publicly attacking senior leaders such as Oburu Odinga, Junet Mohamed, and Gladys Wanga.

According to him, the failure by ODM’s leadership to discipline dissenting voices has emboldened factions and deepened divisions within the party.

“ODM Special NDC should have had a single agenda — removal of Sifuna as SG,” Alai stated, accusing the party leadership of hesitating to confront the issue directly.

Growing Divisions Within ODM

The internal wrangles have intensified following recent political developments within ODM, particularly after the death of the party’s founding leader Raila Odinga, which has triggered a struggle over the party’s future direction.

Several leaders, including Sifuna and other politicians aligned with the so-called “Linda Mwananchi” faction, have openly criticised the current leadership structure within ODM.

During a rally held at Tononoka Grounds in Mombasa, Sifuna reiterated his opposition to serving under Oburu Odinga, who was recently ratified as the party leader.

“I will not be the SG of mediocrity,” Sifuna declared during a political gathering organised by the faction, openly rejecting the idea of working under the new leadership.
